I Am: The Power of Affirmations

By Jason T Walters

Cardboard sign with handwritten 'I Am' statements held by a homeless man, highlighting the power of subconscious identity.
A quiet but powerful reminder: we’re all affirming something, whether we realize it or not.

A Sign

So there I was the other day on my way to teach yoga, and while I’m driving, I’m reciting positive affirmations just like I do every day. I stopped at a light and noticed a homeless man sitting on the divider. At first, I didn’t pay it any mind, but something about the man’s sign caught my attention, and I had to do a double take. I was stunned to see a list of “I Am” negative affirmations — pretty much the opposite vibration that I was sending. It felt as if the universe wanted to show me something, or maybe just give me a confirmation that I was doing the right thing by reciting my positive affirmations. In that moment, I was hit with the realization that even this man was unknowingly tapping into the power of affirmationsjust in the most tragic way possible. I quickly took a picture of the sign with my phone before the light changed, because I wanted to study and reflect on it later. When I looked at the photo, I saw that he affirmed that he was:
homeless
a drug addict
a plumber
a father to a murdered son

and then at the very bottom, in the smallest, almost illegible writing, he finally affirmed that he is a human being.
Here I am affirming my present reality and mindfully creating my future, while this poor man is stuck in a bad place that he probably thinks he can’t escape from.
I was reminded that we’re always affirming. The question is — what are we affirming, and who is choosing the script?

The Psychology of Affirmations

The subconscious mind accepts repeated input — good or bad — and what we affirm consistently becomes who we believe we are. That’s why mindfulness of thought is vital to having a happy life. We live in a society where we’re constantly being bombarded with negativity, so knowing that, we have to mentally create our own positivity. We don’t just say affirmations to manifest money or a new lifestyle — we’re writing our identity. We’re using tools that many others were never given, or may have lost access to along the way. We have to elevate and improve ourselves as human beings — or what is even the point of living?

What Are You Affirming?

This moment reminded me that I’m on the right track with my own life — and why I use affirmations and monitor my thoughts as much as I can. I make sure my thought patterns are positive from the moment I wake up. I always check in with myself mentally and make corrections if I need to. There’s a lot of power in affirmations, and I want to encourage you to reflect on your own “I Am” story. There are so many tools and ideas out there that support positivity and reprogramming — books, courses, YouTube videos — and I’ve even written a couple of short books on these topics myself:
Self-Mastery Through Discipline
and
Manifest Through Action
Take what works for you, and start where you are.
Your voice matters.
Your “I Am” matters.
